Director’s Statement

I’ve been intrigued by the notion of blindsight*; that seeing is in large part unconscious. From accounts of blindness from the point of view of blind poets and photographers, I began to further understand blindness as a kind of seeing. In particular, bringing to the surface the emotions embedded in reality, the lack of vision amplifying what is perceived through all the senses, to understand the ordinary world more intensely in a dream-like waking state. To understand the act of seeing in this way is to view ‘normal’ sight as a disability: being glued to ‘facts’ and a certain notion of ‘objectivity’ is partial vision. This other act of seeing - that is based on the acceptance of one’s individual experience - brings our lives into an active and intimate relationship with the world and ourselves. Stylistically this film is about visualizing this change in perspective the characters undergo, and for the audience to also experience this ‘second sight’ in viewing the film, making visible the pain, loss, and love that forms the (elusive) truth about ourselves and each other.
